Frequently Asked
Questions
How long do floor decals last?
Floor decals can last several months to a few years depending on the material, installation, and maintenance:
Indoor floor graphics typically last 6 months or more if applied on approved surfaces like carpet, tile, vinyl, and wood and properly maintained. Proper maintenance, such as cleaning with mild detergent and degreasing with rubbing alcohol, can help extend their lifespan.
Outdoor graphics are exposed to weather elements like rain, snow, and temperature fluctuations which can shorten their lifespan. Heavy-duty materials and a protective matte covering are recommended for outdoor use.
Floor decals made of thick (14mil) textured PVC material with a fabric reinforced back and strong adhesive can look great for 4+ months in most indoor scenarios. They can last considerably longer depending on installation location, quality, and amount/type of foot traffic.
If tile stickers are installed with the correct size and the surface is properly prepped, they can last indefinitely. Tile stickers in bathrooms have been known to hold up perfectly for over 16 months with daily use.
The key factors are choosing the right material for the intended use, ensuring proper surface preparation, and following maintenance best practices.
With the right approach, floor decals can provide an effective and durable branding or directional solution for months or even years.
Are floor decals easy to remove
Floor decals are normally simple to remove, though the process may vary depending on what kind of flooring you have and also how long it has been in place
Removing a floor decal involves:
Start by pulling up one side of the sticker almost 180 degrees so that it is peeled back at an extreme angle. Proceed pulling the decal off pulling at this angle in order not to leave any traces of glue behind.
Whenever it’s difficult to remove the sticker, you should use a thin scraper or any other thing made of plastic like a credit card wedged between the floor and the table in order to leave a gap through which you can pull it
If the decal rips, heat up its adhesive with a hairdryer so that it softens hence making removing it easier
For any remaining adhesive residue, scrub with a damp cloth dipped in soapy water and wipe off all traces using rubbing alcohol if necessary
Remove adhesive remnants and prevent slip or falls by wiping the flooring dry after clearing off the adhesive.
The catch is peeling away the decal at an almost flat angle while resorting to heat or solvents only if absolutely necessary
When done correctly, most floors do not get damaged by removal of floor stickers.
What is the best material for floor decals
The best material for floor decals depends on the specific application and environment, but in general, vinyl-based graphics are recommended for indoor use, while foil-based graphics are better suited for outdoor use on pavements or tarmac roads.
For indoor floor decals, a good vinyl material should be designed to withstand heavy foot traffic, mechanical cleaning, and be compatible with various floor waxes and finishes. Air-egress materials should be avoided as they can allow cleaners to get under the film and attack the adhesive.
Some key considerations when choosing a vinyl material for floor decals:
The base film should be warrantied for floor graphic use by the manufacturer
Ink durability is important, especially for one-step floor graphics without a laminate
Textured or specifically designed outdoor films are best for short-term outdoor use
Sealed wood provides an excellent smooth surface for floor decals to adhere to
Ultimately, consulting with Imagine Sign Company for advice on the specific application and environment for selecting the optimal vinyl for your floor decals
How big should a floor decal be
Floor decals should generally be made in such a way that they are at least 10” long and wide enough for someone else to read them. Customers mostly go for floor sticker sizes that vary from 12” x 12” to 36” x 48”.
Here are some considerations that you should keep in mind when looking for an appropriate size:
For tile floors it would be advisable for you to order one that will be able to fit only within tile edges so that it does not end with a grout line on your floor signage; example including 12"X 12" tiles that would make 11.5"X 11.5" stickers.
Where you want to have two or more tiles over each other then the sizes must be increased to make it look good; if four 12" tiles are to lay side by side then a 23.5"x 23.5" decal is ideal for ensuring an adhesion that is strong enough and avoid peeling off.
