How large should my interior signage be
When determining the correct size for your interior signage project, here are a few key factors to consider.
Viewing Distance
For every 10 feet of viewing distance, increase the letter height by 1 inch. For example, if the sign will be viewed from 20 feet away, the letters should be at least 2 inches tall.
For signs that will be viewed from closer distances, such as directional signs or room labels, a smaller letter height of 1-2 inches is generally sufficient.
Visibility
Use a simple, easy-to-read font like a sans-serif or serif font. Avoid decorative or script fonts, which can be harder to read at smaller sizes.
Ensure high contrast between the letter color and the background color for maximum visibility. A light background with dark letters or vice versa is recommended.
Consider your lighting conditions when you design your indoor signage.
In well-lit areas, darker letters on a light background are more visible. In dimly lit areas, lighter letters on a dark background may be preferable.
Examples
For a lobby sign viewed from 30 feet away, the letter height should be around 3 inches.
For room labels or directional signs viewed from 10 feet or less, 1-2 inch letter height is typically sufficient.
For ADA-compliant signage, a minimum letter height of 5/8 inch is recommended, but larger letters may be needed depending on the viewing distance.
The key is to strike a balance between letter size and viewing distance to ensure your interior signage is easily readable and visible to your intended audience.
